SGT John E. Cooney was born 31 Jan 1920 in Rhode Island to Frank A. and Alice Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Cooney.  His father was a truck driver. In 1940 John was driving a truck as well and he reported a 1939 income of $780.

John was drafted in February 1942.  Sent overseas he was assigned to F Company 116th Infantry and trained with that unit for the invasion of "fortress Europe". He survived the landing, apparently uninjured and was killed in action 3 days later on 9 Jun 1944.

SGT Cooney is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery
