PFC John Raymond Herbert

PFC John Raymond Herbert was born 14 Jun 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the eldest of the 7 children of Michael Joseph and Pauline Ruth (Geringer) Herbert of Chicago, Illinois.  His parents were descended from Irish and German immigrants respectively and his father worked as a street car conductor but eventually took work in road construction. The family lived at 3603 South Union Avenue in Chicago before moving to Archer avenue before 1935 and then to 5713 South Aberdeen after 1940. John went to work as "farm labor".

John was transferred from the replacement depot to F Company 116th Infantry on 18 Jun 1944. PFC Herbert was killed in action on 12 Jul 1944 near Saint-Lo, France.

PFC Herbert is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.

One younger brother also served during the war. George Bernard Herbert took his GED to qualify to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps and left service as a SGT.
