PVT Perry Rose

PVT Perry Rose was born on 18 Mar 1916 in Sword's Creek, Virginia. He was the 8th of 9 children born to John Henry and Rebbecca Irene (Compton) Rose. The family farmed near New Garden, Virginia. His father died suddenly on 23 Dec 1928. The family continued to farm.

Perry was still farming when he was drafted in May 1941. Like most draftees in the early war period he was sent to a regional training center, in this case Fort Meade, Maryland. It was there that he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry. He then trained with the unit there, participated in guarding the eastern coast, trained at Camp A. P. Hill, in the second Carolina maneuvers and at Camp Blanding, Florida before going to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey and then shipping for England in September 1942. After arriving in England the regiment and PVT Rose trained for the anticipated amphibious landing to liberate occupied Europe. PVT Rose was with D Company when it participated in the landings at Omaha Beach on 6 Jun 1944 and fought with the unit until killed in action in the hedgerow fighting on 19 Jun 1944. 

PVT Rose was repatriated and re-interred in Davis Cemetery in Russell County, Virginia.
