PFC John A. Karafa may have been born in Illinois. His father was also named John and was a miner. After John entered the service he was sent to England and assigned to Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 116th Infantry where he trained for and with which unit he landed on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944. On 14 Jun 1944 he was transferred to C Company 116th Infantry. PFC Karafa was killed in action on 3 Jul 1944. He is buried in the
Normandy American Cemetery.
