SGT Herbert F. Ross

SGT Herbert F. Ross was born 17 Jul 1913 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the 2nd of the 4 children born to Frank William and Olga (Grimm) Ross. His father clerked for a factory and a hardware company. The family lived at 626 Park Avenue and 201 Franklin Avenue in Brooklyn. Although he had only 2 years of highschool, Herbert was by 1930 also working as a clerk and still doing so in 1940 reporting a 1939 income of 1200 while still living at home with his father who reported an income of $1100. The family income for 1939 was reportedly $4600 for that year.

Herbert was drafted in May 1942 and after completing his military training was sent to England and assigned to K Company 116th Infantry. The unit trainied for the amphibious landing that was a planned part of the D-Day invasion of occupied Europe. SGT Ross took part in the landings on 6 Jun 1944 and continued to fight with the unit until 11 Jul 1944 when he was killed in action near Saint-Lo, France.
