PFC Logan Parker Powell

Logan & Vivian on their wedding day
PFC Logan Parker Powell was born 12 Aug 1909 in Atkinson, Nebraska. He was the 6th of the 7 children of William Collmore and Carrie May Sybil (Smith) Powell. His father was working as a teamster in Medford, Oregon in 1910 when Logan's mother died just 7 days after giving birth to Logan's youngest sister, Carrie. Logan was sent back to Johnson County, Nebraska to live with his grandfather, John Powell where he attended school and helped farm. His father died in 1938. In 1940 Logan was living in Cliff, Nebraska working for his uncle, C. C. Morrison, still farming. While living in Custer county, Logan met Miss Lois Vivian Shields to whom he was married on 17 Jul 1943 in Broken Bow, Nebraska.

It was probably very soon after his marriage that Logan was drafted. After his basic military training, he was sent to the European theater and was transferred from the replacement depot to I Company 116th Infantry on 16 Jul 1944. PVT Powell was promoted to PFC on 14 Aug 1944. PFC Powell was killed in action on 25 Aug 1944 as the 29th Division attacked the Germans in Brest, France.

PFC Powell now rests forever in the Brittany American Cemetery.

Grandfather, Lewis U. Smith, served as a PVT in I Company 48th Missouri Volunteers (USA) in the Civil War.
