SGT William Odell Sorrow

SGT William Odell Sorrow was born 20 Apr 1920 near Jackson County near Commerce, Georgia. He was the 3rd of the 6 children born to Lonnie Morgan and Rilla Dora (Ingram) Sorrow. His father farmed in Banks County, Georgia and then in Jackson County along the Jefferson Commerce Road. William farmed with his father.

William was drafted in December 1942. After his basic military training he was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry where he underwent training for the amphibious operation that was to be part of the liberation of France. PFC Sorrow survived the D-Day landing and was promoted to SGT on 9 Jul 1944. SGT Sorrow was wounded on 31 Jul 1944 and evacuated to hospital. He did not return until 29 Oct 1944 when he was transferred from the replacement depot back to B Company. SGT Sorrow continued to lead his soldiers until killed in action in fighting in Setterich, Germany.

SGT Sorrow is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery.

Great, great-grandfather Ezekial Hilliard Ingram served as a PVT in the 34th Georgia Infantry (CSA) and was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 4 Jul 1863. Brother, James Verner Sorrow, also served in the U.S. Army during WW2.
