PFC Walfred Herman Williams Jr.

PFC Walfred Herman Williams Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois on 6 Jan 1922. He was 3rd of the 4 children born to Walfred Herman and Anne Isabel (Anderson) Williams. Walfred senior worked as an auditor. Called Wally to distinguish him from his father, he attended Lindholm Technical High School in Chicago and graduated in 1941. Wally then went to work for the Pennsylvania Rail Road. The family was then living at 6624 South Sacramento Avenue in Chicago.

Wally was drafted in December 1942. After completing his basic military training he was sent to England and once there was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the amphibious assault to liberate Nazi occupied France. He took part in the D-Day landing and fought with the unit until killed by artillery fire near Saint-Lo, France. PFC Williams was killed in action together with SGT Aaron Bowling. 

PFC Williams was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in Arlington Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois. 

Wally's brother, Vernon Robert Williams, served as a CPL in the U.S. Army during the war.
