PVT Joseph Leslie LaRue was born 20 Mar 1922 in Ogdensburg, New York the sixth of eight children of Alfred John "Fred" and Ida Bernice (Forsythe) LaRue.  His mother was born in Ontario, Canada. Fred worked as a chef and later as a carpenter. Before 1942 at least some of the family moved to Richmond, Virginia where Fred was working in the James River shipyard.

Joseph (he apparently was known as Leslie in the family) entered Army service in December 1942. Sent to Europe after basic training, he was assigned to K Company 116th Infantry from the replacement depot on 19 Jun 1944. PVT LaRue was killed in action on 18 Jul 1944.

PVT LaRue was repatriated in 1949.  Although his parents were still alive, it was his brother George who signed the headstone application.  Joseph was re-interred in Ogdensburg Cemetery in Ogdensburg, New York.

Brothers also served. George A. LaRue served in the U.S. Army 1942-1946, Lawrence Walter LaRue served in the U.S. Army 1940-1945.
