SSG Frank T. Mirra

SSG Frank T. Mirra was born 12 Sep 1920 in Yonkers, New York. He was the oldest of 2 sons of Americo and Mary (Carrozza) Mirra. His father worked in construction and his mother in a garment factory and the couple reported a combined income of $1100 for 1939 while paying $30 a month rent for their apartment at 42 South Blecker Street in Mount Vernon, New York. Frank was able to complete high school and began work in 1940.

Frank was working as a salesman when he was drafted in October 1942. Sent to England he was assigned to L Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the amphibious assault that was planned as part of the liberating invasion of occupied France. PFC Mirra took part in that effort, landing at Omaha Beach on 6 Jun 1944. He continued to fight with the unit and was promoted to SSG to serve as a squad leader on 20 Jun 1944. Frank led his squad in combat until wounded on 17 Jul 1944. He was evacuated to hospital but died of his wound(s) on 18 Jul 1944.

SSG Mirra now rests forever in the Brittany American Cemetery.

His father was a veteran of the first World War, serving in France with C Company 52st Pioneer Infantry. His brother, Ralph Mirra, served in the Coast Guard 1942-1945.
