PFC George E. Johnson was born 1 Apr 1924 in Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania to Edward M and Jenny Johnson.  His father worked on a farm.

George entered the Army in May 1943 and after training was sent to Europe in April 1944. On 13 Jun 1944 he was transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry.  Due to the unit's tremendous losses on 6 June, he like many others was again transferred on 15 Jun 1944 to A Company 116th Infantry. The paperwork may have preceeded his actual transfer though because he was wounded with B Company on 16 Jun 1944 and sent to the hospital. He returned to the regiment from the replacement depot on 29 Jul 1944 being assigned to A Company 116th Infantry. He was killed in action on 1 Aug 1944.

PFC Johnson is buried in the Brittany American Cemetery.
