PFC James Hansford Mairs

PFC James Hansford Mairs was born 27 Jul 1912 in Fayette, West Virginia. He was the oldest of 3 children born to Lloyd Lee and Mary Mae (Hendrick) Mairs. His father worked in a powerhouse and ice plant.

James was inducted on 11 Jun 1941 in Huntington, West Virginia. After his training he was eventually sent to the European theater and on 3 Sep 1944 was transferred from the replacement depot to I Company 116th Infantry. PFC Mairs was killed in action on 10 Oct 1944.

PFC Mairs was repatriated in November 1947 and re-interred in Mairs Cemetery in Sissonville, West Virginia.

2x great-grandfather, Adam Aultz, served as a PVT in the war of 1812 in CPT McCown's Company of the Virginia Militia. Grandfather, Tolbert P. Hendrick, served in Hounshell's Battalion, Virginia Cavalry (Partisan Rangers) and C Company 22nd Virginia Infantry (CSA).
