PFC Lundy McClanahan

PFC Lundy McClanahan was born 6 Dec 1923 in Grundy, Virginia.  He was the 2nd of 4 children born to Willie and Alice (Elswick) McClanahan. His father farmed before dying in 1931. His mother remarried and his step-father was a coal miner.  However, Lundy did not live with that family (although his youngest brother did).

Lundy was single when he registered for the draft in 1941 and he gave his mother as his next of kin. After entering the Army and completing basic training he was sent to England and assigned to D Company 116th Infantry. He trained with that unit for the amphibious landings that would be part of the invasion of occupied Europe. He survived the initial combat only to be killed in action on 12 Jul 1944.

PFC McClanahan is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
