PFC Harold Carson Short was born 17 Oct 1918 in Pound, Virginia. He was the 3rd of 7 children born to Jason Alexander and Ada Rae (Jones) Short. His father rented a farm near Roberson, Virginia for many years but eventually bought a home near Gladesville, Virginia which was valued at $600 in 1940. In that year Harold's father reported a 1939 income of $650 and Harold was working at McCarkle Lumber Company.

Harold was drafted, probably in late 1941 or early 1942. After basic military training he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry and was sent to England where he trained with the unit for the planned amphibious assault and invasion of occupied France. PFC Short was killed in action in that effort on 6 Jun 1944.

PFC Short was repatriated in 1947 and re-interred in the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
