After Palmer was drafted and completed in basic military training he was sent to England and assigned to G Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the amphibious assault which took place on 6 Jun 1944 and in which he took part. PFC Onsgard was still fighting with the unit when he was killed in action on 16 Jun 1944.
PFC Onsgard was repatriated in 1948 aboard the ATS Eric O. Gibson and re-interred in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Of all his siblings, it appears that only younger brother Bennie also served during the war.
