PFC James Calvin Curkendoll was born in 1924 in Buckhannon, West Virginia to Calvin Wilbur and Clara (Baxa) Curkendoll.  Clara died in February 1926 as did his sister Della.  His father was a coal miner and later managed a store and filling station in Buckhannon.

When he was drafted in March 1943 James was working in that gas station.  Sent overseas, on 13 Jun 1944 he was transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry.  On 15 Jun 1944 he was again transferred, this time to A Company 116th Infantry.  James was killed in action on 11 Jul 1944.
