PFC Howard J. Miller was born 8 Oct 1917 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the first of 2 children born to Charles Oris and Catherine Florence (Zahneis) Miller. His father worked variously as an estate auditor, worker in a watch factory, and as a millwright. Charles reported a 1939 income of $1400. Howard completed high school and was working as a grocery clerk in 1940 and he reported a 1939 income of $900. That would be about $15,900 today. His father was paying $23 a month rent for their home at 7021 Cambridge Street in Columbia, Ohio.
Howard was drafted in November 1942. After initial training and some unknown assignments, he was sent to the European theater and the replacement depot. On 10 Jul 1944 he was transferred to C Company 116th Infantry to serve as a rifleman. PFC Miller was killed in action on 7 Aug 1944 near Vire, France.
PFC Miller was repatriated and re-interred in
Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
