PFC Carl Lee Reedy

PFC Carl Lee Reedy was born 30 Aug 1898 in Shenandoah County, Virginia to William Harrison and Anna Mae (Hyde) Reedy.  His father worked as a hired hand and later the family farmed.

Carl was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry.  Carl died of broncho pneumonia on 30 Mar 1919. PFC Reedy is buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

PFC Erwin Richard Bane

PFC Erwin Richard Bane was born 23 Oct 1891 to Eli Leady and Laura Bell (McMeans) Bane of Burkes Garden, Virginia.  Erwin was the first of 13 children born to the couple. The family farmed. Erwin would also farm bur moved to a place in Wayne County, Indiana.

PFC Bane was a member of D Company 116th Infantry when wounded in October 1918.  He lingered in the hospital until 21 Jan 1919 when he died of his wounds.

PFC Bane is buried in Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wayne County, Indiana.

Brother, Cecil Callaway Bane, served as a Wagoner in Headquarters Company 317th Infantry in WW1.

CPL Miles D. Sanger

CPL Miles D. Sanger was born in March 1900 in Frederick County, Virginia to John F. and Sarah Ann (Sine) Sanger.  His family farmed especially raising apples.  Miles was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry.  He died of wounds on 4 Dec 1918.

CPL Sanger was repatriated and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

PVT Granville Hall

PVT Granville Hall was born 10 Sep 1895 in Green County, Kentucky to William Thomas and Louella Frances (Milby) Hall.  The family farmed.

Granville was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry and was killed in action 22 Nov 1918. How this was so we do not know it is more probable that he died of wound(s) received in October 1918.

PVT Hall is buried in Hall Cemetery in Greensburg, Kentucky.

PVT Angelo LaRusso

PVT Angelo LaRusso was born about 1872 in Bisacuiguino, Italy. He was a son of James and Theresa (Tortorice) LaRusso.  Angelo immigrated with his family in 1898 and the family lived in Jefferson County, Alabama where his father supported the family as a truck farmer growing vegetables for local sale. Angelo worked as a coal miner, his last residence being in Bessemer, Alabama.

After being drafted on 10 Apr 1918, Angelo was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry and he would train with the unit and embark with them aboard the USS Finland on 15 Jun 1918 when the unit was sent to France.

PVT LaRusso was wounded during the fighting in late October 1918 and died of his wound(s) on 3 Nov 1918.

PVT LaRusso was repatriated and re-interred in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Bessemer, Alabama.

PFC F. B. McMeans

PFC F. B. McMeans was born about 1894 in Cherokee County, Texas one of several children of Joseph Wesley and Ruth (Cornelison) McMeans. His father farmed and ran a saw mill.  His mother died in 1898 and his father remarried shortly thereafter.  F. B. had several half-siblings from his father's second marriage.

When F. B. went into the service he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry.  PFC McMeans was killed in action on 27 Oct 1918.  We believe his body was returned to the U.S. but do not know where he is buried.

His brother, PVT Albert M. McMeans died as a result of the influenza epidemic while stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Brother, Fred Taylor McMeans served in the army 1918-1919.

PVT Rainey Malcolm Mashburn

PVT Rainey Malcolm Mashburn was born 27 Feb 1890 in Plum Bayou, Arkansas the oldest of twelve children of Jesse Wade and Sallie Naomi (McMullen) Mashburn.

Rainey was likely drafted and then assigned to E Company 116th Infantry.  He shipped out for France aboard the Finland departing from Hoboken, New Jersey on 15 Jun 1918.  The after action report edited by MAJ Hierome Opie indicates that PVT Mashburn was killed in action on 8 Oct 1918 but other sources give 25 Oct 1918 as his date of death.

PVT Mashburn is buried in Moore Hill Cemetery in Yell County, Arkansas.

PVT Hugh Moor Corum

PVT Hugh Moor Corum was born 29 May 1894 in The Plains, Virginia the 4th of 7 children born to Albert Franklin and Laura F (Jeffries) Corum.  His father was a carpenter.

Assigned to D Company 116th Infantry as a CPL when the shipped out aboard the Finland on 13 Jun 1918, PVT Corum was killed in action at Molleville Farm on 24 Oct 1918.  PVT Corum was repatriated but we do not know where he was buried.

CPL John D. Sudduth

CPL John D. Sudduth was born 30 Mar 1900 in Warrenton, Virginia to John and Sallie B. (Wines) Sudduth.  His father was a "laborer".

When he entered the service, John was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry.  CPL Sudduth was killed in action on 23 Oct 1918.  He was repatriated and is buried in the Warrenton Cemetery in Warrenton, Virginia.

PVT John Kornoelje

PVT John Kornoelje was born 11 Apr 1887 in Aetna, Michigan to Pieter and Johanna (Hinkleban) Kornoelje.  Both parents were natives of the Netherlands.

PVT Kornoelje was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry when he died of wounds on 18 Oct 1918.  His body was returned to the United States and he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Bugler James H. Miller

Bugler James H. Miller enlisted from Virginia.  Assigned to D Company 116th Infantry, Bugler Miller was wounded and died of his wound(s) on 17 Oct 1918.

Bulger Miller is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.

PVT Joseph Marcello

PVT Joseph Marcello was born in 1892, perhaps in Italy.  After entering the service from Connecticut he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry.  PVT Marcello was wounded and died of those wounds on 17 Oct 1918.  His body was brought back to the U.S. and he is buried in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

PVT Abraham Cohen

PVT Abraham Cohen enlisted from New York and was a member of D Company 116th Infantry when he was killed in action 16 Oct 1918. He was survived by his wife, Irene.

PVT Cohen is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.

PVT Ignac Bukata

PVT Ignac Bukata was born 11 Sep 1888 in Poezernia, Wiehuslia, Poland.  He immigrated in 1907, probably the same year as fellow D Company 116th Infantry soldier, Zelig Brooks.  PVT Bukata died of wounds on 16 Oct 1918.

PVT Bukata is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.

PVT Roy Summers

PVT Roy Summers was born 6 Sep 1894 in Medford, Oklahoma to David Jessie and Lillie Mae (Shepherd) Summers.  The family farmed. Roy was farming for his father in Mist, Arkansas when he registered for the draft. When Roy entered the service he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry.  He was serving with that unit when he was killed in action on 15 Oct 1918.

PVT Summers was repatriated and rests forever in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

CPL Samuel Edward Hunsberger

CPL Samuel Edward Hunsberger was born 30 Jul 1900 in Prince William County, Virginia to Samuel Clifton Fulmer and Rose Ella Clagett (Godfrey) Hunsberger.  His father was a miller in a flour mill.

Samuel was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry when he was killed in action on 15 Oct 1918.  CPL Hunsberger is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.

PVT Thomas Willis Stephens

PVT Thomas Willis Stephens was born 28 Nov 1893 in Leesville, Louisiana the second of seven children of Thomas Rasberry and Sarah Kathryn (Simmons) Stephens.  His father worked for the railroad.  When Thomas registered for the draft he gave his work as being a moulder for Leesville Iron Works.

Thomas was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry after he entered the Army.  He was with the unit when he was killed in action on 15 Oct 1918.

PVT Stephens was returned to the U.S. and is buried in the Smarts Chapel Cemetery in Leesville, Louisiana.

CPL Samuel W Temple

CPL Samuel W Temple was born in July 1893 the son of Thomas B. and Annie Jane (Orgain) Temple of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Samuel's father died when he was 4 and his mother never remarried. The family farmed in Dinwiddie and then moved to Norfolk where 3 of the children worked to support the family, including Samuel who worked in a grocery (at age 16). Samuel looks a bit disheveled in this photo but he must have been pretty sharp to have made Corporal by the time of his death. He had been enlisted in A Company 4th Virginia Infantry of the Virginia Army National Guard but due to the need to meet Virginia's quota he was transferred to the new 116th Infantry Regiment.  He was serving with D Company 116th Infantry when he died 12 Oct 1918. Buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, his mother was one of many mothers who made the pilgrimage to France to visit their sons' graves. Annie made the trip in 1930 at the age of 70. By this time she had already lost 4 of her 8 children.

PFC Strother M. Corbin

PFC Strother M. Corbin was born about 1890 in Broad Run, Virginia, the son of Wilford Alexander and Martha (Leach) Corbin.  His father worked as a farm hand.

Strother was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry when he was killed in action on 12 Oct 1918.

PFC Corbin is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.

PVT George R. Rodgers

PVT George R. Rodgers enlisted from Virginia and was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry when he was killed in action on 12 Oct 1918.  PVT Rodgers is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.
