PVT Joseph Edward Stricker

PVT Joseph Edward Stricker was born in Baltimore, Maryland on 19 Oct 1919. He was the only child of Howard William and Elsie Elizabeth (Brown) Stricker. His father worked as a machinist's helper but his parents divorced before 1930 and his mother re-married. Step-father, John Edward Weikel, worked for the railroad as a car inspector. The family lived at 2506 Franklin Street in Baltimore which they rented for $30 a month. The family was moderately well off, John reported a 1939 income of $1650 and Joseph was working as a pressman in a factory reporting a 1939 income of $650. Joseph then got a job with Bethlehem Steel as a welder. He married Lucille M. Palumbo in 1942 and they would have a son in February 1943.

Joseph was drafted just 4-days before his son's birth. After completing his basic military training he was sent to the European theater. He was transferred from Headquarters 9th Army to K Company 116th Infantry on 7 Dec 1945 to serve as a rifleman. Sometime in April 1945 Joseph was wounded but it was not reported. He died of his wound(s) on 6 Apr 1945. 

PVT Stricker was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in the Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

Son, Joseph Edward Stricker Jr, retired as Detective Sergeant with Baltimore County Police Department. Grandsons, Joseph Edward Stricker III and Michael John Stricker also served with the department.

PFC Wilhelm Arthur Hilse

PFC Wilhelm Arthur Hilse was born 22 May 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland to Erich and Mabel Hilse.  His father was a native of Germany and a coal dealer. 

Wilhelm was drafted in March 1943 at which time he was working as a farm hand.  After his initial training he was sent to Europe and on 24 Oct 1944 was transferred from the replacement depot to F Company 116th Infantry.  PFC Hilse was killed in action on 25 Nov 1945.

PFC Hilse was re-interred in the Baltimore National Cemetery in 1948.

PVT William Charles Pohlmann Jr.

PVT William Charles Pohlmann Jr. was born 24 Jul 1920 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the oldest of the 2 children born to William Charles and Alice (Cook) Pohlmann. His father was a wood carver and maker of furniture. The elder William reported a 1939 income of $1200. That same year our William was working as a machinist for an aircraft company and reported earning $1300. The family lived at 2330 Riggs Avenue in Baltimore. In 1941, young William married Marie Agnes Scherer, also of Baltimore. The couple would have a daughter the fall of 1942 and William was working for the Glenn L. Martin Company. The family lived in Stansbury Estates in Baltimore.

William was drafted in September 1943. After his basic military training he was sent to England and then to the replacement depot. He was transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry on 16 Jun 1944. He fought with the unit as a rifleman until wounded on 17 Jul 1944 after which he was evacuated to hospital. PVT Pohlmann returned to the unit via the replacement depot on 28 Oct 1944. He served with the unit, again as a rifleman, until killed in action in the attack on Setterich, Germany on 18 Nov 1944.

PVT Pohlmann was repatriated in 1949 and re-interred in the Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

William's father served as a CPL in an artillery unit in France and fought in the Meuse-Argonne campaign. He and Alice are also buried in the Baltimore National Cemetery. 

PVT Clifton Arnold Robertson

PVT Clifton Arnold Robertson was born 27 Sep 1915 in Middle River, Maryland. He was the 2nd of the 6 children born to William Earl and Elsie Elizabeth (Sterling) Robertson. His father worked as a carpenter and in 1940 was working as a janitor in an air craft factory. Although Clifton had left home by 1940, he was working for Glenn L. Martin in the airplane factory as a welder. 

Clifton was drafted in April 1944. After his basic military training he was sent to the European theater and was transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry on 25 Oct 1944. PVT Robertson was part of an attack on Setterich from Baesweiler on the morning of 18 Nov 1944 when he was killed in action.

PVT Robertson was repatriated and re-interred in the Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

PVT David Edward Marriott

PVT David Edward Marriott was born 14 May 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland the youngest of 4 children of George Edward Carroll and Marcella M. (Holmes) Marriott. His father was a fireman.

David was drafted in February 1943.  Sent to England after basic training he was then sent to the replacement depot.  PVT Marriott was transferred from the replacement depot to F Company 116th Infantry on 19 Jun 1944 and wounded that same day and evacuated to hospital. He was returned to F Company on 9 Aug 1944 and fought with the unit until he was killed in action on 1 Sep 1944.

PVT Marriott was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

PVT Walter Richard Starsoneck

PVT Walter Richard Starsoneck was born 15 Sep 1917 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the youngest of Richard and Hilda I. (Herald) Starsoneck's 2 children. His father was a butcher. Walter would not go beyond grammar school.

Walter was drafted in December 1943. After his basic military training he was sent to the European theater and transferred from the replacement depot to L Company 116th Infantry on 7 Aug 1944. PVT Starsoneck was killed in action as the regiment fought to liberate Brest on 30 Aug 1944.

PVT Starsoneck was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in the Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

PFC Robert Calvin Kimmelshue

PFC Robert Calvin Kimmelshue was born 4 Nov 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland the youngest of 6 children born to Mervin Ernest and Laura Belle (Schwartz) Kimmelshue.  His father was a police officer. 

Robert had only completed one year of high school when he was drafted in March 1943.  After his initial training he was sent to Europe and, on 6 Jul 1944, was transferred from the replacement depot to C Company 116th Infantry.  He was killed in action that same day, 6 Jul 1944.

PFC Kimmelshue was repatriated and is buried in the Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

PVT James Kaleph Martin Sr

PVT James Kaleph Martin Sr was born on 16 Jul 1907 in Baltimore, Maryland.  He was the 4th of 5 children born to Robert L. and Anna Marie Martin.  His father worked as a hotel watchman and later the family farmed. James married Helen Elona Szelesy. The couple would have 3 children by 1938. James worked as a driver and Helen as a housekeeper. In 1940 James was working for Balto Transfer Company.

James was drafted in October 1943. After his basic training he was sent to Europe.  On 22 Jun 1944 PVT Martin was transferred from the replacement depot to G Company 116th Infantry. He was killed in action on 30 Jun 1944.


PVT Martin was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in the Baltimore National Cemetery.

PFC Marvin Raymond Herrman

PFC Marvin Raymond Herrman was born 25 Apr 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland to Frank and Sue E (Davis) Herrman.  His father was a "bolter" in a shipyard and a house painter. In 1940 Marvin was working as an aircraft mechanic. 

Marvin was drafted in March 1943.  Sent overseas, he was assigned to I Company 116th Infantry prior to D-Day and participated in the amphibious assault on "fortress Europe". PFC Herrman was wounded on 17 Jun 1944 and evacuated to hospital where he died of his wounds on 18 Jun 1944. 

PFC Herrman was repatriated in 1948 and is buried in Baltimore National Cemetery. 

Although Marvin is noted on his enlistment record as being married we have not found any further information about his wife. 

PFC Adrian M. Holt

PFC Adrian M. Holt was born 30 May 1924 in Maryland the son of Inez (Abigill) Holt.  His father, name unknown to us, apparently left the family shortly after his birth.  His mother remarried and his step-father, Glenn Forrest Anderson, was a carpenter. 

Adrian had only completed 2 years of high school when he was drafted in April 1943.  He was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry.  He trained with that unit for the amphibious assault on the French beaches and made the assault with that unit.  PFC Holt was killed in action on 17 Jun 1944.


PFC Holt is buried in Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland. Adrian's uncle, PFC Melvin L. Abigill, was died of a non-battle related injury in Italy in 1945 and is also buried in the Baltimore National Cemetery.

PFC George Henry Simmons

PFC George Henry Simmons was born 27 Apr 1918 in Cockeysville, Maryland. He was the oldest of the 4 children of Charles Henry and Eleanor M. (Gartling) Simmons. His father supported his family through working on a dairy farm, laboring in mills or on a farm. George was driving a moving van in 1940 reporting 1939 earnings of $780 while his father reported an income of $520 for the same year. The family farmed as well.

George registered for the draft in 1940 and was drafted in March 1941. He was undoubtedly sent to Fort Meade, Maryland and there assigned to A Company 116th Infantry. PVT Simmons would then have trained with his unit at Fort Meade, near Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and at Camp Blanding, Florida before shipping out for England aboard the Queen Mary in September 1942. Once in England the unit then underwent intensive training for the planned amphibious assault in the effort to liberate occupied Europe. Promoted prior to June 1944, PFC Simmons was struck in the head and killed in action in that amphibious assault on 6 Jun 1944.

PFC Simmons was repatriated in 1947 and re-interred in the Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
