PVT William James McCarthy was born 9 Feb 1925 in Limerick, Ireland. He was the 4th of 5 children born to Justin John and Margaret "Mae" (Savage) McCarthy. His father died in Ireland in 1929 and the family emigrated, arriving in New York on 2 May 1930. A brother had died in infancy in Ireland. His mother remarried and William's step-father was Thomas Meade who worked as a hospital porter. With 2 of William's older sisters also working and contributing to the family income the household had a reported income of $1732 for 1939.
William was working as a file clerk when he was drafted in July 1943. After his initial training William was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He trained for the upcoming amphibious landing that would be part of the invasion of occupied France. PVT McCarthy was killed in action in that effort on 6 Jun 1944.
PVT McCarthy was repatriated in 1947 and re-interred in the
Long Island National Cemetery in East Farmingdale, New York.
