PVT Eugene Lavern Weese

PVT Eugene Lavern Weese was born 8 Nov 1924 in Scranton, Kansas. He was the 4th of 6 children born to Jonah William and Katheryn Bulah (Luby) Weese. His father was a railroad worker and later a coal miner and owned their home on Scranton Street which was valued at $150 in 1940. Jonah reported a 1939 income of $300. Eugene was apparently working for his father as a miner in 1942.

Eugene was drafted in June 1943. After completing his basic military training he was sent to England and assigned to F Company 116th Infantry probably in late November or early December 1943. There was still training with his unit as it prepared for the amphibious assault on Nazi occupied France that would take place on 6 Jun 1944. PVT Weese took part in the D-Day landings and fought with the unit until killed in action on 12 Jun 1944.

PVT Weese was repatriated and re-interred in the Scranton Cemetery in Scranton, Kansas.

Great-grandfather, Jacob Hulsopple, served as a PVT in B Company 108th Illinois Infantry (USA) in the Civil War. His younger brother, Jonah Gerald Weese, was killed while serving in the 45th AAF Air Repair Squadron in Munich, Germany 27 Apr 1947.
