PFC Oliver James Hammond

PFC Oliver James Hammond was born in Vanderburgh County, Indiana on 27 Oct 1916 to Luke and Margaret (Hunt) Hammond.  His father worked as an auto mechanic, a railroad brakeman, and in 1940 was apparently unemployed.

Oliver was working as a driver when drafted in August 1941.  He may have completed his training in time to travel to England with Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 116th Infantry in September 1942 but he was assigned to that unit when he was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944 in the D-Day amphibious assault on Omaha Beach.

PFC Hammond was repatriated and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana.
