PVT Dallas Alvin Nickol was born 10 Mar 1922 in Radnor, Ohio. He was the youngest of 4 children born to Dallas Andrew and Ethel Margaret (Bonner) Nickol. His father died the November before young Dallas was born and his mother died of complications concerning gall stones in 1927 when he was just 5-years old. Dallas would be raised by his older sister Frances with the help of grandparents although she was only 15 when their mother passed. While it is unclear how the children were supported by 1940 Dallas completed high school and was working as farm labor with a reported 1939 income of $300. At the time he was living with Frances, her husband and children.
He was drafted in December 1942. After basic training he was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the amphibious landing that would be part of the invasion of occupied France. That landing took place on 6 Jun 1944 and PVT Nickol was killed in action on that day.
PVT Nickol was repatriated and re-interred in the
Claibourne Cemetery in Richwood, Ohio.
Great-grandfather, Henry Bonner, served in G Battery, 1st Ohio Light Artillery (USA) in the Civil War.
