PVT John Job O'Neil was born 13 Sep 1919 in New York City, New York. He was the 5th of 9 children born to Edward J. and Mary (Sargent) O'Neil. Both parents had immigrated from Ireland. His father worked for Edison Power Company and his mother worked as a housekeeper. In 1940 the family paid $18 a month rent for an apartment at 284 East 137th Street in the Bronx. His father reported a 1939 income of $1820 after working for the power company for at least 20 years. John was working in a window factory and reported a 1939 income of $1040.
After John was drafted he was sent to England and assigned to A Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the amphibious assault that was a planned component of the invasion and liberation of occupied France. He was with that same unit on the morning of 6 Jun 1944 when he was killed in action in that effort.
PVT O'Neil lies in the Normandy American Cemetery.
