Metro was still working as a miner when he was drafted in February 1942. After completing his basic military training he was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He would train with the unit for the planned amphibious assault that was to be a part of the invasion of occupied Europe. PVT Pluta was killed in action while participating in that amphibious attack on 6 Jun 1944.
PVT Pluta was buried in the Normandy American Cemetery. However, his family also has a cenotaph for him in Saint Michael's Orthodox Cemetery in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania.
Metro was drafted with another young man from Mount Carmel, Charles Bernard Pavoris, who was assigned to C Company 116th Infantry and would be killed in action 11 days later, on 17 Jun 1944.
