SGT Russell William Ingram was born 16 Apr 1921 in Roanoke, Virginia to William Green and Annie Sue (Welch) Ingram. His father was a brakeman and conductor on the railroad with a reported 1939 income of $2200.
Russell was a PFC in a Roanoke National Guard unit when it was federalized in February 1941. As a member of D Company 116th Infantry, Russell trained with the regiment for 2½ years as it prepared for the invasion of Hitler's "fortress Europe". He was killed in action in that effort on 6 Jun 1944.
SGT Ingram was repatriated and is buried in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, Virginia. His brother, Raymond, served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. His sister, Dorothy, was in the Cadet Nurse Corps.
