PFC Clarence Hobson Campbell was born 14 May 1919 in Nelson County, Virginia to Bland Massie and Sarah Hawes (Fitzgerald) Campbell. His father was a farmer. Clarence did not get more than a grammar school education.

In April l941, Clarence was drafted.  It was likely after training that he was sent to M Company 116th Infantry to replace soldiers who had been pulled from the National Guard unit for other duties.  He was with that unit for the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach which is where he was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.

PFC Campbell was returned to the U.S. and he is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville, Virginia.
