PFC Harry Lurie was born 5 May 1918 in Chicago, Illinois the youngest of three children of Samuel and Gussie (Sipperstein) Lurie. His father, a native of Poland, managed a delicatessen but by 1940 Harry and his older brother Irving were supporting the family as clerks in a wholesale grocery. Together they reported a 1939 income of $2000. The family rented and apartment at 2633 Hirsch Street for $36 a month. Harry married and then separated from his wife.
In August 1942 he was drafted. After his initial training, Harry was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the expected amphibious assault that would begin the invasion of Hitler's "fortress Europe". PFC Lurie was killed in action on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944.
PFC Lurie was buried in the
Normandy American Cemetery.
