PFC James Frank Unger was born 2 Jan 1924 in Carlisle, Indiana. He was the 2nd of 5 children born to Frank and Ethel Leona (McComas) Unger. His father supported the family by farming a farm he owned in Haddon Township. The family apparently lost the farm in the depression and moved to Turman Township to live with Frank's brother William who was married to Ethel's sister Edna. James only completed 1-year of high school. When he registered for the draft in 1942, James said that he was self-employed. This was probably as a hired hand on various farms.
James was drafted in February 1943. After completing his basic military training he would eventually be sent to England. He was then transferred to A Company 116th Infantry with which he trained for the amphibious landing that was planned to be part of the effort to liberate Nazi occupied France. He took part in that effort and was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.
PFC Unger rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery.
