PFC Thomas Eugene McArtor was born 7 Apr 1916 in Loudon County, Virginia. He was the first-born of 11 children of Thomas Carl and Helen Eugenia (Householder) McArtor. The family farmed and the younger Thomas was still working on the family farm in 1940. 3 of his siblings would died before 1940.
Thomas was drafted in May 1941. In that time period it was common for draftees to be assigned to fill vacancies in units that were relatively local to their place of enlistment and he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry. Thomas likely participated in training with the newly federalized unit at Camp Meade, Maryland and Camp Blanding, Florida before embarking for England in September 1942. When in England the unit, including Thomas, trained and prepared for the amphibious assault that would be part of the invasion of occupied Europe. PFC McArtor was killed in action in the landings on 6 Jun 1944.
PFC McArtor was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
