PVT Franklin Joseph Polster was born 2 Mar 1919 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was the only son of Carrie Margaret (Polster) Polster. his mother supported him, with the help of family members by working various jobs such as a private cook and machine operator. As soon as he could, Franklin was also working and in 1938 was working as clerk at Blue Hen Luncheonette by 1940 he was working as a clerk in United Cigars, Whelan Stores and by 1942 was working as the manager of the store. Franklin reported a 1939 income of $755. The family was living at 800 Fourth Street in Wilmington with his uncle Frank Joseph Polster who was working as a fireman earning about $1100 a year. Franklin married Mae Elizabeth Hastings on 10 Jan 1942 and they would have a son in April 1943.
Franklin was drafted in May 1943. After his basic military training and a short furlough home he was sent to England and assigned to F Company 116th Infantry. He trained with that unit for the planned amphibious operation that was to be part of the invasion of occupied France. PVT Polster was killed in action in that effort on 6 Jun 1944.
PVT Polster was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware.
Mae re-married and passed away in 2014. Their son is still living.
