PFC John Joseph McGartywas born 16 Jul 1913 in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the 2nd of 2 sons born to John Joseph and Ellen Josephine (Smith) McGarty. His father was a native of Garvagh, Ireland and a police officer in Providence. His father died in 1928 and his older brother worked for the highway department to support the family of 3. Young John was himself working for the highway department by 1940 reporting a 1939 income of $850.
John was probably drafted in 1942. Sent to England and assigned to E Company 116th Infantry he trained with the unit for the amphibious assault planned as part of the invasion of occupied Europe. PFC McGarty was killed in action while taking part in the amphibious landing on 6 Jun 1944.
PFC McGarty is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
