PVT Martino Salanitri

PVT Martino Salanitri was born 14 Jan 1919 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the youngest of the 6 children born to Joseph and Angelina (Permicone) Salanitri. Both parents were natives of Sicily, Italy. The family moved to New York City, New York in August 1921. His father was a shoe maker in a local factory. His brother Nunzio died at the age of 11 in 1930.

Martino was probably drafted in 1942 and after training sent to England and assigned to G Company 116th Infantry. Once in England he would have trained with the unit for the amphibious landing that was a part of the effort to liberate occupied France. PVT Salanitri took part in the D-Day landings on 6 Jun 1944 and he continued to fight with his unit until killed in action on 10 Jun 1944.

PVT Salanitri rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery.

Martino's brothers also served in the war. Vincent, Vito, and Attilio Salanitri also served in the U.S. Army during WW2.
