SGT Carl William Raymond was born 5 Apr 1916 in Minerva, New York. He was the youngest of the 4 children (3 boys) born to William James and Adeline A (Owens) Raymond. Carl graduated from Minerva High School and attended Albany Business College. His father died in 1935 and Carl took a civil service position in Washington, D. C. working for the U.S. Printing Office.

Carl was drafted in September 1942. After basic military training he was sent to England and assigned to L Company 116th Infantry. He must have had a good reputation as a soldier because he was promoted to SGT prior to June 1944. It was in England that he trained with his unit for the planned amphibious assault on occupied France. SGT Raymond was with L Company on 6 Jun 1944 when he was killed in action as the unit struggled to secure a beachhead in France. SGT Raymond would be awarded the Silver Star for his actions before his death.

SGT Raymond rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery.
