PVT George Ernest Williams was born 1 Jul 1924 in Calais, Maine. He was the oldest child and only son of George Ernest and Sara Curtis (Sprague) Williams. His parents, first his father and then his mother, were mail carriers for the Wesley, Maine post office for many years as well as farming. Young George attended Washington Academy and Machias High School where he graduated in 1943. He was a member of the Wesley, Maine Grange.
George was drafted in July 1943 and had his basic military training at Camp Croft, South Carolina and Fort George Meade, Maryland before being sent to England in December 1943. Once in England he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry, the 1st Battalion heavy weapons company, as an ammunition handler. As part of the unit he trained for the amphibious landing that was to be a part of the effort to liberate occupied France. PVT Williams was killed in action on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944.
PVT Williams was repatriated and re-interred in the Wildwood Cemetery in Wesley, Maine.
