SSG John Goode Barnes was born 18 Jun 1906 in Nansemond County, Virginia to John Goode and Mary Eleanor (Davis) Barnes. His father died before he was 10 years old. His mother remarried John Ramey Wills Sr who founded a company still run by his half-brother's descendents. John was living with the family as late as 1940. He was working as a "weigher" in a peanut factory at that time.
When John was drafted in May 1941 the record shows him has having 2-years of college and working as a manager. Sent overseas he may have already been assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. It was with that unit that he boarded a boat to make the amphibious landing at Omaha Beach. He died that day, 6 Jun 1944, on the shore of France.
Repatriated in 1948, SSG Barnes is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
