T5 Frederick Walter Hopping

T5 Frederick Walter Hopping was born 8 Feb 1907 in Hanover, New Jersey to David Augustus and Emma E (Schoeneck) Hopping. His father farmed but died in 1925. It is unclear what his mother did to support her family after his father died. Frederick worked in advertising for a publishing company n oil company and a manager of a wholesale rubber company.

Frederick was drafted in May 1942.  After his entry training he was sent to Europe and assigned to Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 116th Infantry.  He prepared with that unit for the amphibious assault on "fortress Europe" and was with that unit on 6 Jun 1944 for the D-Day landings when he was killed in action.

T5 Hopping is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery. The family placed a cenotaph in memory of Frederick in the First Presbyterian Church of Hanover Cemetery in Hanover, New Jersey.

Frederick's grandfather, Augustus Stiles Hopping served during the American Civil War as a CPL in the 15th New Jersey Infantry. His 3X great-grandfather, Samuel Hopping, served during the Revolution in the New Jersey Militia.
