PFC Robert Leslie Garbett was born 18 Mar 1919 in Maryland to Robert Leslie and Bertha Mae (Stewart) Garbett. His father worked as an electrician for a railroad and a shipyard before becoming an electrical engineer. He had a reported income in 1939 of $2000. His mother was working as a "sorter" for a local manufacturer and reportedly earned $900 in 1939. Robert himself was working as an elevator operator in 1940 and reported a 1939 income of $950.
When drafted in May 1941, Robert was apparently following in his father's footsteps and was working as an electrician. Sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry, Robert trained with for and participated in the amphibious assault on the French beaches of Normandy with that unit. He was killed in action during that attack on 6 Jun 1944.
PFC Garbett was repatriated and is buried in the Saint Augustine National Cemetery.
