2LT
James John Limber was born 7 Sep 1917 in Chicago, Illinois to John
G. and Ella (Pontes) Limber. James was the sixth of their nine children. Both of his parents were natives of Tripolina, Greece. John supported his family as a peddler, laborer and later owned his own produce store. James' mother died in 1928 and his father raised his younger children with the help of his older children but most attended high school.
James enlisted on 2 Dec 1941 just 5-days
before Pearl Harbor. Having apparently demonstrated leadership potential and with a high school diploma, James was sent to Officer Candidate School. James was assigned to Headquarters 1st Battalion
116th Infantry on D-Day to serve as the Battalion S-2. 2LT Limber was wounded in both legs while making his way through the water then crawled on to the beach where a shell fragment hit him between the eyes and he was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.
He was survived by his father and 4 siblings
and rests in the Normandy American Cemetery.
