PVT James D. Godwin was born in 1925 in Montgomery, Alabama to Lovelace Rudolph and Ethel Corine (Salter) Godwin. His father worked as a clerk for a candy company and Railway Express.
James was drafted in July 1943. He was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He embarked with that unit for the amphibious landing at Omaha Beach and was killed in action there on 6 Jun 1944.
We are certain that PVT Godwin was repatriated and is buried in the Montgomery area but do not know where he rests.
