PFC William Robert Chipps was born 12 Mar 1925 in Salem, West Virginia to William David and Anna (McGeorge) Chipps. His mother died in 1926 and William and his 2 older sisters were sent to live with his paternal grandfather. His father worked in a gas refinery but William apparently did not live with him after his mother's death.
William was drafted in July 1943. After his training he was sent overseas and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He was with that unit on 6 Jun 1944 when he was killed in action while participating in the amphibious assault at Omaha Beach.
PFC Chipps is buried in the Knight of Pythias Cemetery in Salem, West Virginia.
