SSG Meade Hite Baker Jr

SSG Meade Hite Baker Jr was born 5 Feb 1913 in Cumberland County, Virginia to Meade Hite and Katherine Nesbitt (Shepherd) Baker.  His father supported his family of 9 as a mail carrier until his death in 1926.  After than the family farmed.

Drafted in May 1941, Meade was working as a store clerk and had completed 2 years of college.  He was assigned to A Company 116th Infantry and was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944 while with boat team #6 of that unit in the amphibious assault at Omaha Beach.

SSG Baker is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery. 

His brother, Moorman Shepherd Baker, served in the 1st Infantry Division and survived the war.
