PVT Edward John Stambaugh was born 25 Feb 1923 in Paradise, Pennsylvania. He was the 2nd of the 4 children born to Ivory Jacob and Annie Rebecca (Gentzler) Stambaugh. Their families had been in York County, Pennsylvania for at least 2 generations. The family farmed, renting at first and then owning a farm near Paradise which was valued at $1500 in 1940. After completing school, Edward worked as a farm hand for L. E. Ham near Thomasville, Pennsylvania.
Edward volunteered for the Army enlisting in September 1942. He took his basic military training at Fort McClellan, Alabama and Fort Riley, Kansas before being sent to England in 1943. After arriving in England he was assigned to M Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the amphibious landing that was a planned part of the liberation of France. PVT Stambaugh survived the landing and fought with M Company as they pushed inland. He was killed in action on 16 Jun 1944.
PVT Stambaugh was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in the Paradise Holtzschwamm Lutheran Church Cemetery in Thomasville, Pennsylvania.
