SSG Hogan M. Johnston was born 9 May 1916 in White Oak, North Carolina to William Joseph and Annie Sarah (Melville) Johnston. The family farmed.

Hogan was drafted in May 1941. After training he was assigned to B Company 116th Infantry but whether it was before or after the unit shipped to England in September 1942 is unknown at this time.  However he clearly trained with the regiment for the D-Day amphibious assault on the Normandy beach code-named "Omaha".  SSG Johnston  was killed there on 6 Jun 1944.

SSG Johnston is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery
