After entering the service, Earnest was assigned to M Company 116th Infantry. He was with the unit at Camp McClellan, Alabama and sailed with the unit aboard the USS Finland on 15 Jun 1918. He trained with the regiment for trench warfare in France. PFC was killed in action on 15 Oct 1918.
PFC Matney was repatriated and re-interred in West View Cemetery in Radford, Virginia.
