PVT Emery Nathend Derbyshire was born 28 Oct 1895 in Manton, Michigan to Joseph Henry and Deborah S. (Harkness) Derbyshire. The youngest of 5 children, Emery was the only one of the 2 sons to serve. In 1910 the family was farming in Cedar Creek Township, Michigan. On 23 Nov 1917, Emery married Mona E Rollins but they had no children.
