PVT Richard F Williams was born in February 1896 in Eupora, Mississippi. He was the 5th of 8 children born to Isaac Marion and Luticia T. (Strickland) Williams. The family farmed in Webster County, Mississippi.
After being inducted, Richard was assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He sailed to France with the unit aboard the USS Finland which departed Hoboken, New Jersey on 15 Jun 1918. The ship docked at the port of Saint Nazaire, France on 28 Jun 1918. After trench warfare training and a period of acclimatization in a "quiet" sector on the front lines, B Company was part of a large offensive in the vicinity of Verdun. PVT Williams was killed in action in that effort on 11 Oct 1918.
PVT Williams is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.
Grandfather, Nathaniel Edward Williams, served as 3rd Lieutenant in I Company 3rd Mississippi Infantry in the Civil War.
