PVT Walter Hitchcock

PVT Walter Hitchcock was born 9 Jun 1894 in Gholson, Mississippi the last of 7 children of George and Harriet Elizabeth (Higginbotham) Hitchcock. The family farmed. Walter's mother died before 1910 and Walter was sent to live with and work for neighbors. In 1917 he was working for Sam Smith of Preston, Mississippi as farm labor.

Drafted in late 1917, Walter was assigned to I Company 116th Infantry and trained with the unit at Camp McClellan, Alabama.  PVT Hitchcock sailed for France with his unit on 15 Jun 1918 aboard the USS Finland.  He was killed in action on 11 Oct 1918.

PVT Hitchcock was initially buried in Consenvoye, France and then moved to the Oise-Ainse American Cemetery or the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery but there is no record of his burial in either location.
