PVT William J. Teed was born 16 Feb 1888 in New York City, New York the 2nd of 6 children born to William and Delia (Grady) Teed. His father was working as a printer on cloth before he died in 1910. After his father's death, all the children, as young as 16, would go to work to support the family. William was driving for a grocer. William married Mary T. Wissler on 16 Nov 1910. They would have a daughter in 1912 and a son in 1914. When William registered for the draft in June 1917 he was working as a teamster for J. D. McDermott at 221 West Broadway in New York.
William was inducted on 4 May 1918. He was first sent to Fort Slocum, New York and assigned to the 4th Recruit Company of the General Service Infantry. On 7 May 1918 he was transferred to the 4th Recruit Company of the 50th Infantry Brigade at Camp McClellan, Alabama. On 20 May 1918 he was again transferred to L Company 116th Infantry. PVT Teed sailed for France with the regiment on 15 Jun 1918, departing Hoboken, New Jersey aboard the USS Finland. PVT Teed was killed in action on 12 Oct 1918.
PVT Teed was repatriated and re-interred in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York. His grave remained unmarked until 1935.
Brother, Edward George Teed, served in the 301st and 302nd Infantry and in France from April 1918 to 1919. Brother, Frank James Teed, served in Headquarters Company 321st Infantry 81st Division (1918-1919) in France. William's son, Harry Wissler Teed, served in the Army during WW2 (1942-1945).
