PVT Verl Danther Weiss

PVT Verl Danther Weiss was born 26 Jun 1925 in Athens, Ohio. He was the 5th of the 7 children born to Charles Herbert and Grace Marie (Wilson) Weiss. Charles worked as a miner in a coal mine and as a carpenter to support his family. He reported a 1939 income of $960 and owned a home in Lee, Ohio valued at $500. Verl managed to attend 2 years of high school but left to farm for himself.

Verl was drafted in September 1943. After completing his military training he was sent to the European theater and transferred from the replacement depot to L Company 116th Infantry on 7 Aug 1944 while the unit was in the vicinity of Vire, France. The division was soon tasked with liberating Brest and the 116th started operations in the Brittany peninsula. PVT Weiss was wounded on 31 Aug 1944 and evacuated to a field hospital but, despite treatment, PVT Weiss died of his wounds on 1 Sep 1944.

PVT Weiss was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in the Alexander Cemetery in Hebbardsville, Ohio.

Great-grandfather, Jesse Coleman Wilson, served as a PVT in C Company 141st Ohio Infantry (USA) during the Civil War.
